Hello Kitty is a white kitten character owned by Sanrio company, and one of the most famous and beloved characters in the world today.
The character was created by the Japanese designer Yuko Shimizu in 1974, and first appeared on a vinyl coin purse sold in Japan in 1975. Soon after her debut, the sales of Sanrio increased sevenfold, and her popularity grew among children and teenagers as well as adults, and it made a global success together with Japanese kawaii culture, embracing its cuteness.
Today, Hello Kitty goods are sold in over 130 countries and regions around the world, and she always treasures her relationship with each and every fan from kids to adults.
Half a century has passed since Hello Kitty was introduced to the world, and to commemorate her 50th anniversary, the Tokyo National Museum will be holding the “Hello Kitty Exhibition: As I Change, Kitty Changes, Too” from late 2024 to early 2025. The exhibition will unravel the unique charm of Hello Kitty, with the theme of “50 years of Kitty and Me”.
This exhibition will feature exhibit sections with a variety of themes as well as the largest number of merchandise ever on display. In addition, there are plenty of other highlights, including collaborative works with unique artists, original video content, and photo spots.
